<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">My Mom passed away in 2003. A few weeks ago, my stepfather <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">gave me a box of my mother's family papers. Among those papers <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">were three old notebooks. Two were daily diaries of my great, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">great, grandmother, Josephine Jordan. They span the years 1892 <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">to 1898. Grandmother Josephine wrote only a line a day. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Occasionally she wrote two. On a few rare occasions, she penned <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">three lines. I don't think she missed a day of writing in those seven <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">years.Here's what the diaries look like:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">As I read the 1892 diary, I began to learn about this ancestor who I <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">previously knew absolutely nothing about. I discovered that, within <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the constraints of only a few words each day, Josephine could not <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">elaborate. Nevertheless, as the chronicle of days and months and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">years pass, a life story develops. Because of the lack of details, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the story is something of a puzzle. It can only be assembled by <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">understanding the historical setting (more about this later), the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">cultural context, picking up little clues in the entries, reading <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">"between the lines," and employing some imagination.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">There are people who will, undoubtedly, find the diaries to be <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">boring. But the combination of genuine humanity, unpretentious <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">writing, seven years of continuity(I will be posting all the years if there is an interest), and 115-year-old agrarian setting <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">will be of interest to many. I believe that if you read the first year of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine's diary entries (a line a day doesn't take long to read), <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">you will be drawn into the story of this woman's life. You will find <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">yourself putting the puzzle together, wanting to know more, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">wondering what will happen next.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">One thing is abundantly clear right from the very first entry. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine is a Christian woman. Her faith is rooted deep. It is the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">central focus in her life. It is the well from which she draws hope <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">and joy. It is what sustains her through the difficulties and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">disappointments she encounters along the path that God, the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Great Orchestrator, scripted for her.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine and her husband, who she refers to as "Husband" or <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">"Hubby" (Update: I have learned that Husband's name was Cyrus) had a farm in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Aroostook County, Maine. That's way up in the northern part of the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">state. It appears that they lived somewhere around the town of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Presque Isle. Like every other farmer in that region, they grew <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">potatoes. Farming was all about potatoes in Aroostook county <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">back then, and it pretty much still is.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">But the Jordan farm was surely not like the typical farm of these <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">days. Farms back then were smaller. They were also more <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">diversified and self sufficient. Farm folk provided much of their own <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">food, and fuel from the forest. The community they lived in was <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">more closely knit than communities of today. People relied on, and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">cared more about, their neighbors.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine and her husband had four children. When the diary <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">begins in 1892, Blanche, the oldest, is 19 years old. Three years <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">later, she would marry a local farmer named George Lang. They <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">would have a daughter, Gertrude, who would grow up and marry a <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">local farmer by the name of Percy Philbrick (the man pictured with <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">me on the cover of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Writings-Deliberate-Agrarian-Herrick-Kimball/dp/0972656472?&linkCode=wey&tag=whizbook-20" style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; font-size: xx-large;">This Book<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">. Gertrude and Percy were my grandparents.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine's other children were Frank, who is 18 years old on <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">January first of 1892. Another son, Laurie, is 14 years old. And the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">baby of the family, Gertie, is 9 years old. It is a small family <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">compared to many farm families of the time.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">It's worth noting that Josephine was not a doctor, scientist, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">inventor, entrepreneur, or politician (women could not even vote in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">1892). She did not travel the world. She was not directly involved in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">any great historical event. She wasn't even a good writer. The fact <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">is, she never distinguished herself in any notable way outside the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">little circle of her home and family.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Which is to say, Josephine was an ordinary farm wife. As such she <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">devoted herself to helping her husband, caring for her home, her <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">family, and, at times, others in her community when they were in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">need. She dealt with great tasks of cooking, washing, ironing, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">feeding, churning, sewing, and so forth--day after day, month after <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">month, year after year.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">It is the commonness of her life, her hard work, her self-sacrifice, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">her hospitality, and her devotion to faith and family that <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">distinguishes Josephine--especially when viewed from the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">perspective of our modern culture where so many woman have, by <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">choice or circumstance, refocused their daily work away from <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">home and family.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">The fact of the matter is, Josephine Jordan demonstrated her love <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">for her Lord and her family by her devotion to the work of being a <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">wife and mother. That is one of the things that stand out when I <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">read the lines of words that chronicle her years.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Another thing that stands out is what appears to be Josephine's <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">greatest desire in life. It is not for any personal or material <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">gratification. It is, rather, that her children would know Jesus Christ <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">as their Lord and Savior. Time and again Josephine speaks of this <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">spiritual burden she has for her children, and her great hope that <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">they would follow in the faith.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">As I write this introduction to the diaries, I have read only about two <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">years into the seven. I do not know exactly how Josephine's life <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">unfolds. I do not know if all her children embraced her faith. But in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the one other notebook among my mother's papers is a line-a-day <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">diary from daughter, Blanche. From Blanche's diary it appears that <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">she did hold fast to the Christian faith. Blanche's daughter, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Gertrude, did too. So did Gertrude's daughter, Mary, (my mother). <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And I have also. So, to a degree, God gave Josephine the desire of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">her heart. That is something to keep in mind as you read about her <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">life.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">There was one more item among my mother's papers that is <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">pertinent to this story. It is a small page of yellowed notebook <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">paper with a faded pencil-scrawl. The words touched me deeply <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">as I read them...
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Oh Josephine, thy gentle voice is hushed.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Thy warm true heart is still.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And on thy pale and peaceful face,
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">is resting death's cold chill.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">We have kissed thy marble brow.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And in our aching hearts we know
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">We have no Josephine now.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Through all pain at times she smiled,
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">A smile of heavenly birth.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And when the angles called her home,
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">She smiled farewell to earth.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Heaven retaineth now our treasure.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And the sun beams long to linger,
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Where our sainted mother sleeps.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">To The Internet?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">When my mother, the great granddaughter of Josephine Jordan, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">lay dying of cancer, she asked me to read her Psalm 103. There, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">in part, it says:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">The flower that was Josephine Jordan's life faded generations <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">ago, but a precious piece of her remains in two old notebooks. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Now, one hundred and fifteen years later,wonderfully, amazingly, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">providentially, that fragile remnant testifies of my great, great <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">grandmother's love and trust in Jesus Christ. And, more than that, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">in entry after entry, Josephine's humble writings glorify God.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">With that in mind, I have decided to share my grandmother <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Jordan's diaries with you beginning where the first note book begins.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">It is a way of honoring her memory and the simple agrarian life she lived--a life focused on faith and family. I think we can learn some things from this common, but remarkable farm wife of 1892.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">I am also publishing these diary entries so I can copy them off, put them in a binder and keep them for my children (perhaps even my grandchildren) to read one day. Josephine's old style of penmanship takes some effort to understand and it's easier to read in this format.

<span style="color: #ffe599; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Historical Perspective

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">As you read Joephine's diary, keep in mind that in 1892 she does <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">not have ANY of the household conveniences that we take for <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">granted these days. Though Thomas Edison's light bulb was first <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">displayed to the public in 1879, it was not until 1910 that the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Central Maine Power Company was founded, and household <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">electricity probably did not get to northern Maine farms until the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">1920's. So there were no electric stovetops, ovens, refrigerators, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">washing machines. irons, toasters, blenders, or any of that. There <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">was also not radio or television or telephone.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">The Jordan home probably had a hand pump to get water, unless <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">they had a spring above the house and could gravity feed it into the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">kitchen.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Prior to the Civil War, President Millard Fillmore installed the first <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">flush toilet in the White House. But in 1892, twenty-seven years <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">after Lee surrendered to Grant, it's unlikely that there were any <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">flush toilets in the farm homes of Aroostook County, Maine. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Outhouses were the standard.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine cooked on and baked in a wood stove. She also heated <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the water for clothes washing and bathing using a wood stove. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">When she ironed clothes, her irons would have been heated by a <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">stove too. Chances are there was another stove (or more) to keep <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the house warm in winter.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">The family probably had an ice box, but possibly not. Perhaps they <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">had a spring house to help keep food cool. One thing Josephine <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">did have was canning jars— they were in widespread use at that <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">time.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">When Josephine writes about going for a drive, she is not in an <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">automobile. It would be 1909 before the first affordable <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">automobiles (the Model T) started rolling off Henry Ford's <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">assembly line. Which means there were no tractors on any of the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">farms in 1892. The work was accomplished with animal power, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">man power, and human ingenuity.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">In 1875 a new Maine law required children between the ages of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">nine and fifteen to go to school for at least three months a year.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">That same year, the New Brunswick Railway was run into Fort <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Fairfield, thus opening up outside markets to Aroostook's farm <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">and forest products (potatoes in particular). More land was being <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">cleared to farm and more people were moving into the area to <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">establish farms. When Josephine's diary speaks of Husband <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">loading a car, it is a rail car he is loading. In 1894, the Bangor & <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Aroostook Railroad was established. That made the northern <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">woods of Maine even more accessible.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">At one point, Josephine writes of potatoes going to a factory. It is <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">probably a starch factory she is referring to.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">When she mentions an event at the Union, she is probably <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">speaking of the Union Meetinghouse which was a place for civic <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">and religious functions. Such meeting houses were built in the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">1800's all down the Eastern Seaboard. The Union Meetinghouse <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine speaks of is probably one built in 1859 at the junction <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">of Blaine and Presque Isle roads.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">When Josephine speaks of ordering material for a dress she may <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">well have ordered it from the Montgomery Ward catalog. By 1886 <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the catalog (which was targeted towards the rural population of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the country) was 280 pages in length with more than 10,000 <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">illustrations. Aaron Montgomery Ward's merchandise catalog was <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the official supplier to the Grange. Sears and Roebuck was just <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">getting its business underway and would soon overtake <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Montgomery Ward in sales.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Josephine does not mention the Grange but it was established in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">1867 by Minnesota farmer and activist, Oliver Hudson Kelley. If it <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">had not made it to northern Maine by 1892, it would soon be there. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Daughter Blanche's husband, George Lang, was a member of the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Perham Patrons of Husbandry in 1920.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">As I consider the comforts of my home and the average farm home <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">of 1892, it occurred to me that they probably did not have spring <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">mattresses on their beds. Rope beds and feather ticks were the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">norm.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">And one ubiquitous modern-day thing that was certainly not found <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">anywhere in Northern Maine would be.... PLASTIC.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Can you imagine a world without plastic?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The Second Industrial Revolution

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: xx-small;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Until I did some research into the era around 1892, I did not realize <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">that it was a time in history referred to as the second industrial <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">revolution. The following information from Wikipedia sheds some <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">light on what was happening in the world at large during the time <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">of Josephine's diary entries.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: xx-small;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">From 1865 to about 1900, the U.S. grew to become the world's <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">leading industrial nation as evidenced by the expansion in the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">pace of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which expanded from <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">under $10 billion in 1800 to well over $350 billion by 1900.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Where the First Industrial Revolution shifted production from <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">artisans to factories, the Second Industrial Revolution pioneered <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">an expansion in organization, coordination, and scale of industry, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">spurred on by technology and transportation advancements. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Railroads opened up the West, creating markets where none had <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">existed. The First Transcontinental Railroad, built by Irish and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Chinese immigrants, provided access to previously remote <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">expanses of land. Railway construction boosted demand for <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">capital, credit, and land.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">To finance the larger-scale enterprises required during this era, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">the Stockholder Corporation emerged as the dominant form of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">business organization. Corporations expanded by combining into <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">trusts, and by creating single firms out of competing firms, known <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">as monopolies. Business leaders backed government policies of <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">laissez-faire. High tariffs sheltered U.S. factories and workers from <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">foreign competition, federal railroad subsidies enriched investors, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">farmers and railroad workers, and created hundreds of towns and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">cities. All branches of government generally sought to stop labor <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">from organizing into unions or from organizing strikes.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Powerful industrialists, such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Rockefeller and Jay Gould, known collectively as "robber barons", <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">held great wealth and power. In a context of cutthroat competition <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">for wealth accumulation, the skilled labor of the old-fashioned <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">artisan and craftsman gave way to well-paid skilled workers and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">engineers, as the nation deepened its technological base. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Meanwhile, a steady stream of immigrants encouraged the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">availability of cheap labor, especially in the mining and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">manufacturing sectors.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">[Note: Josephine did not vote because women could not vote in 1892. Her husband probably voted for the incumbent Benjamin Harrison in the Presidential election. Aroostook county and the whole state of Maine went for Harrison. Nevertheless, he lost to Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland. 44 states voted in the election that year.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Another interesting bit of information regarding the election that year was the rise of the Populist party. One thing the Populist party advocated was inflation of the money supply by putting more silver coinage in circulation. Cleveland was a hard money advocate and not in favor of inflating the money.
